This piece can come on its own, come as a pair or come as a trio of carefully constructed structures mimicking the form and design of a neck adornment carefully enclosed in a protective box. Its birth came from a desire to celebrate women- past and present- across the African continent whom I see as warriors, protectors, combatants, growers and guardians. The piece celebrates the coming together of elements pertaining to both femininity and strength.
The black and white represent the juxtaposition between the two elements which are seen as two extreme polarities- these are often seen as very different and often not expected to have a point where they meet. The piece seeks to show that these elements are not mutually exclusive- it is not that one should exist without the other- they can and do in fact both find space in one body.
